Happy Wednesday friends and welcome to Art Crush Women #106! It’s been more than two years that I have been coming at you every Wednesday to share, support and celebrate my fellow female artists! I’m honoured and humbled for all the kick-ass women who have participated and everyone who has followed along–THANK YOU! This week’s #artcrushwomen has her own unique way of featuring women that is equal parts sweet and melancholy. Figurative artist, Zoe Hawk, paints for instance, girls dressed for prom wearing rainbow hues. Her subjects stand, pond-side and camera-ready while one revolts, bent over with her hair in the water. There is cheeky twist to many of Hawk’s scenes of awkward teen years: school girls conform to society wearing uniforms and knee socks while rebelling the sameness they’ve been subjected to–a girl cuts the hair of her classmate while others appear adrift in their own worlds. Another stands in a schoolroom corner facing the wall, punishment for some misbehaviour? Zoe’s teens, at the cusp of womanhood share a solidarity and loneliness all at once. Meticulously rendered, these paintings are steeped in nostalgia of a simpler time and show us that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Happy Wednesday friends and welcome to Art Crush Women #105! I’m feeling the need for humour at the moment and this week’s #artcrushwomen, Andrea Hoogue delivers that and more. Vancouver-based Hoogue is a talented artist whose subject matter on first glance, is super-cute: cats, dogs, raccoons and dolls, dolls, lots and lots of dolls! Hang on, this kind of cute includes a healthy dose of creepiness which makes it so wonderful! Andrea’s scratchboard pieces are intricately executed, her fine line work is incredibly detailed and finessed. Lions, birds, rabbits and cats with human bodies, wear dresses and pants and are at home in cozy cabins. They clutch books, eat cake or knit, while Easter eggs lie at their feet. Andrea also uses oil paint and the baby doll heads she creates with their blank stares and empty eyes, are equal parts nostalgic and the thing of uncomfortable dreams.
